A good friend of mine just had a major flood in her finished basement.  Something happened with her hot water heater and before she knew it, there was water everywhere.  Luckily, the insurance company came to the rescue to help with the recovery.  She had to take photographs of all the damage and make a list of the furniture and furnishings that were damaged.

Then, she had to deal with the details.  There had to be an itemized list of the type of item damaged with the size, age, and material it was made of.  Not only was it time consuming, but very overwhelming because she didn’t have all those details at her fingertips.  Who remembers when something was purchased?  She couldn’t remember where she has purchased some things, let alone the age of the item.  Just thinking about the effort involved makes me want to lie down and take a nap!

After listening to the ordeal that my friend went through, I thought there must be a lesson to be learned from her.  From now on, I am going to keep a folder of each room that is decorated.  In this folder, will be the receipts of any furniture, fabric, accessory that is purchased.  Also, if possible will be small clippings of the fabric, paint chip and finish that are used.  Any manuals will be placed in this folder, too. There will be a list of the finishes with the name, style number and a photo, if possible.

Maybe, in some small way, by keeping a folder with all pertinent information, an overwhelming ordeal, will become a minor annoyance.
